Happy memories of beach trips are woven throughout my life from childhood to “grannyhood”. I now enjoy taking my grandkids to explore and find delight in the many pleasures of the beach. The footprints in the sand represent this journey, while the overall shape frames a wonderful memory. I have incorporated found objects from my local beach into this mosaic – shells, driftwood, sandstone, pumice, sea sponge, sea glass – a mixture of both the permanent and impermanent, just like the beach. I’ve used Mexican Smalti as a nod to glass coming from sand, an ancient material, as well as polymer clay for the child (new).
